Welcome to Dog Adoption Info

Below you will find answers to some frequently asked questions related to dog adoption. We hope this information aids you in your dog adoption process.

I'm not sure what type of dog I want to adopt. Where can I find information?

The internet will probably be your greatest resource. There are many sites that now contain information on all of the dog breeds. Start by determining the size of dog you wish to adopt as this will narrow your breed choices. From there, you narrow the breeds by characteristics such as: coat length, temperament, exercise needed, health risks, and more. A visit to a local animal shelter may also help you in your research.

Do I need to find a breeder?

No. In fact there are many rescue agencies and shelters that have numerous dogs that need good homes. Again, by searching the internet, you can probably find a rescue agency devoted to the particular breed you are looking to adopt. While finding a breeder is an option, it is certainly only one of many options.

How much will owning a dog cost?

That depends on the type of dog you own, the agency you adopt from, and the individual dog's health. Adoption fees can vary from $50 to $450 if you use a shelter or rescue agency. Buying a dog from a breeder is much more expensive, with some breeds costing thousands of dollars. Your dog will require yearly vet visits and vaccinations, in addition to the daily cost of feeding, grooming, and caring for your dog. Pet insurance is now available if you wish to purchase that as well.

How long does the adoption process take?

Again, that depends on the agency, shelter, or breeder. If you purchase from a breeder, the dog will need to be 8-12 weeks before he/she can leave its mother. If you go to a local shelter, you may be able to leave with a dog the same day. Rescue agencies sometimes prefer to do a home visit before allowing a dog to be adopted, so the process can take anywhere from a couple of days to a couple of weeks.

Is it better to adopt a puppy or an older dog?

This is purely personal preference. Some people prefer to adopt a puppy because they want to train the dog from puppyhood to ensure the dog behaves they wish it to. Others feel training a puppy is too much work and much prefer to adopt an older dog that has already had some training.
